REASONS WHY STUDENTS ARE WITHDRAWN FROM SCHOOL AND WHY STUDENTS DROP OUT OF SCHOOL AFTER FIRST YEAR.

Last time I explain all you need to know about admission as a Jambite and other things related to JAMB and admission. Today I will expose you to problems and challenges students encounter in school. Why most students drop out of school and what leads to withdrawal of many students from school and how to avoid them all. I will also teach you how to become financially free as a student.

I believe you want to further your education to become somebody in life. Maybe a medical doctor, a Lawyer, Engineer or whatever you chose to. Millions of students out there desire to become one thing or the other in the future and you and I know that this can only be actualized by acquiring tertiary education in a particular field or the other. In order to make our vision a reality there are some things we must put into cognizance by proper information. If you are not informed you will be deformed. Information brings about education.

WHAT IS EDUCATION?
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, belief and habits to bring about a positive change in the behavior of the learner, to become useful to himself and the society at large.

Your success in school begins the very first day you start attending classes. Your first semester in school will determine how you will graduate and the type of product you will be. Many students lost it all from year one first semester and they later start struggling to meet up until they pass out of school because they lack sound foundation of on how to survive within the walls of tertiary institutions.

The first mistake freshers make is this feeling that they have arrived. I call it IGG (Initial Gra Gra).  You see Students becoming so excited that they are now in school. They are easily carried away by fashion trends, Boy friend and girl friends stuffs and click of friends with high taste of life. All this leads to emptiness and may change their career goals and major plans. The fun activities, fashion and new friends becomes the order of the day neglecting the fact that their primary objective of going to school is to focus on their studies.

FACTORS THAT AFFECTS STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMACE.
Most students are withdrawn from school as a result of the following factors;
(a) NOT TAKING ASSIGNMENT/ASSESMENTS SERIOUS
In tertiary institution your overall grade is determined by your performance in assessments. If you don’t do your assignments and submit as at when due there is no how you will pass the course. Some students may have trouble with reading and writing assignments. The level of writing required in tertiary institution is higher and in greater quantity than what was expected in secondary school which calls for your mastery in writing, grammar, spelling, etc. The curriculum and syllabus is complex and difficult than expected. Assignments may require several readings and much more time than students allot.

(B) Another factor is time management.  There are lot of things to figure out – such as which courses to take, who to get to know, where to go for this or that, when to go for lectures and when to read. A lot of energy goes into trying to make sense of the new environment. You may feel confused if you are not in the right position. You should make inquiries about your department from those ahead of you in your department and be where you are supposed to be at the right time.

( c ) Bad influence.
There are so many students with promiscuous behavior and some drug addicted ones to beware of. You have to be mature, make responsible choices, and be aware that others may not engage in the most constructive behaviors. Most students are pushed into one bad character or the other by roommates.  Some students may even talk like “everyone else is doing it, so what makes you different.” Keep in mind that this is their perception rather than the reality.

( d ) Roommates: Roommates often have different lifestyles, values, and ways of doing things. A roommate can be particular, messy, reliable, unreliable, assertive, helpful, noisy, confused and difficult to live with. You may find it challenging to live with a new person. For others, it will be easy and friendships will emerge. If you are the type that finds it very difficult to cope with roommates the best way to survive this is to stay alone. Most often female students find it very difficult to cope with roommates. I always advise female freshers to stay alone in year one and think whether to have roommate or not in year two.

WHY STUDENTS DROP OUT OF SCHOOL IN THEIR FIRST YEAR.
Research has shown that 1 out of 10 students drop out after year one which makes a total of 10%. Sometimes it goes beyond that to 20%. When we look at this big problems after trying to know the reasons why these students drop out of school I felt very bad and made up my mind to always help as many that I can help not to drop out of school.

The major reason why students drop out of school is Finance. Financial challenge is the major factor behind the death of so many dreams and ambition. If you find yourself in school and complain that the cost of schooling is on the high side you will hear lecturers saying “Education is expensive and it is not for the poor”. When students finish spending all their life savings and discover that they can’t afford the expenses in the following academic session they drop out of school out of frustration and agony.

Many of you are struggling to gain admission now but the truth is only 50% of all the admitted students in every department will graduate from each department. Many will be withdrawn and many will drop out because they can’t cope with the cost of schooling.

BELOW ARE FEW OUT OF THE REASONS
PARENTAL SUPPORT
though parents supports to some extent, but the truth is there is no amount of money that your parent will give to you that will ever be enough. It will never be enough except you are a son or daughter of a multi millionaire that can spoil you with money.

PERSONAL NEEDS.
As human you need money to keep body, mind and soul together and when you are lacking always it is natural for you to become depressed. Your mind feels so rejected and you find yourself like someone who is not suppose to be in an academic environment. When you need money to buy clothes to look good you look here and there and there is no one to look up to. Even if you call your parents, there are sometimes you will be so broke and when you call home they will tell you that there is nothing. You know and understands because the last penny was sent to you just few days ago.

When all these start setting in, you see some students involving themselves into activities that they will never get into naturally such as prostitution by girls and the boys going into robbery. A girl becomes a prostitute when she starts having two to more boyfriends all in the name of getting money from all of them in order to take care of herself. Sometimes you see female students going to club at night not because they want to have fun, but to hook up with sugar daddies and vice versa. Girls become prostitute at night and student during school hours. Some are infected by HIV while some are used for money rituals by politicians and so on.

STUDENT’S INABILITY TO MEET UP WITH ACADEMIC DEMANDS.
So many students fail not because they chose to, but the situation of things around them warrants their failure.   You discover that you are so broke to the extent that you don’t even have money to type assignment when your colleagues are typing assignment. The most annoying part of it is when you manage to borrow money from your friend to type the assignment and the lecturer still ask you to submit your assignment with money or prepare to fail the course. All these things happen every day in school and there is nothing you can do to stop it. You submit most assignments with money.

COURSE REGISTRATION
Aside paying your tuition fees and acceptance fees, you will pay to register most of your courses before you will be allowed to write exam. Lecturers will force you to buy their photocopy text books without which you won’t be able to submit your assignments and write test. Departmental dues, faculty dues, students’ union dues and so many of them.

When you sit down at calculate all this things you get tired and confuse on the next step to take to meet up, because when you don’t submit your assignment on time your lecturer start having issues with you and when you fail to buy a lecturer’s textbook he will fail you and you have to carry over the course the following year.  By the time you go through this struggle and see your result at the end of the academic session you will be at the edge of either withdrawal or probation. This is why so many students drop out of school every year. It is not because they are not brilliant but the factors and situation of things around them has fold and crippled them to that level.

This has been happening over the years before we find ourselves in the state of recession. It implies that many more students will drop out of school this year after year one. Maybe 30% or 40% because many parents are broke. Many homes can no longer afford two square meal let alone sponsoring their children in school. For this reason I decided to educate you on this and prepare you ahead of the journey you are about to embark on. My wish for you is that you succeed and graduate as a first class student and overall best student in your department. The only way to do that is to also educate you on how to make all the money you need as a student which brings us to how to become financially free as a student.

HOW TO BECOME FINANCIALLY FREE AS A STUDENT

The fact that you are a student does not make you 100% dependent. You can sponsor yourself in school and even have much more to take care of your family as a student. I remember when I was newly admitted into school. I believed I’ve saved all the money that I need to carter for myself throughout my stay in school, but little did I know that my money can only take me through year one and first semester year two. When I resumed second semester year two I became broke. Then it dawn on me that I needed to rekindle the entrepreneurial spirit in me. I started looking for job to do and as God will have it with my knowledge of web design I was employed in the ICT department of my school. I gained my heavy pocket back and I started living well again.

I paid my school fees and accommodation myself, bought my text books and clothe myself without calling home, because I find it difficult to call home when I knew they were managing by then. I bought my JAMB form myself and sponsor myself when I was travelling to schools to write post-utme. I understood what I was going to face and I decided to hold the bull by the horn and call a spade a spade. I will stop here for today and continue tomorrow.

STILL ON HOW TO BECOME FINANCIALLY FREE AS A STUDENT!
CHEERS! I LOVE YOU AND I SO MUCH CARE! THAT IS WHY I AM DOING ALL THIS!!
